About National Pancake Day

February 23, 2010

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised more than $3.25 million to support charities in the communities in which it operates. While IHOP's National Pancake Day typically takes place on Shrove Tuesday, this year the company will host its free pancake event on Tuesday, February 23, extending the fundraising window by one week to maximize donations for Children's Miracle Network. With your help, we hope to raise $5 million in five years for Children's Miracle Network and other local charities through your donations in 2010!

Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products...hence the name Pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday.

Weekend report--- Free event Free food

Williams-Sonoma will be holding a complimentary technique class this Saturday, February 20, at Stonebriar Centre (2601 Preston Road) starting at 9:30 a.m. The class will demonstrate how to cook comfort foods such as meatloaf, mashed potatoes and tacos. Meatloaf and tacos seem like an odd combination, but they are homey recipes we all love.

This Saturday at noon, Freebirds World Burrito will be having a SuperMonster Burrito-Eating Contest at all three of their locations: Old Town, Belt Line and Canyon Creek. For $12, burrito lovers can compete to eat the Super MonsterBurrito (filled with rice, cheese, meat, mixed veggies, queso, pico, salsa, corn, guacamole, sour cream and lettuce) for the quickest time. The winner will get their photo on the wall, a Fanatic card preloaded with a free burrito and a Freebirds T-shirt. Not sure if we would ever want to see another burrito again after battling the beast, but that’s just us.

Fat Tuesday Specials - Free Event

Load up on beads, make sure you have a designated driver and stock the fridge with water and other electrolyte-replenishing liquids for Wednesday morning because today is Fat Tuesday, and it’s time to party. It’s your last night to drink heavily, eat fatty foods and practice any other vices before giving them up for Lent, if that’s the way you roll.

Free Event for the Family... Alligator Café (4416 Live Oak St.) will be hosting their 4th Annual Fat Tuesday and Crawfish Boil starting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16. This event will be kid-friendly and will include a clown making balloon animals. Also, Alligator Café will have live music, a crawfish boil, lots of bead throwing and Mardi Gras giveaways.

Other Event just because...
If you’re looking an adult-only option, check out
The Hurricane Grill (2831 Greenville Ave.) for their Fat Tuesday festivities. Hurricane is a New Orleans-style oyster bar that specializes in Cajun cuisine, so we doubt they will fail to please. They will be offering $4 Hurricanes for the night, along with other beer and liquor specials. If this is your last night of fried freedom (Lent again), then we suggest trying the fried trio special of crawfish, oysters and shrimp for $15.95 and washing it down with a Dirty Hurricane Martini. Here’s a tip, remember to take a couple of headache relievers before going to bed to prevent hating life the next morning—we hear those Dirty Hurricanes are a dangerous thing.
