Wednesday - Weekend Report 9.23.09

As payday approaches for many, some people rejoice while others groan as they hand it over to those “30th and the 1st “ day bills. Don’t worry though, for those who have just enough to get by for another two weeks, I have found a great weekend event around town that shouldn’t break your piggy bank (or savings account) and will not have the State Fair of Texas Weekend Crowd.

Uptown (right outside of Downtown), is having its 2nd annual All About Uptown Festival: A Celebration of Art and Living.

There is a plethora of to do such as local bands, pet stations, kids area with face painting and crafts, tours and yes, food all day long.
  • Local bands--including Beatles cover band Hard Night's Day, Scott Whitaker and Grammy-Award winning Brave Combo--will play at the festival's main stage throughout the day.
  • Food and beverages- Chipotle, Dream Cafe, Genghis Grill, Sambuca, The Ginger Man, and Uptown Bar and Grill
  • Kids Korner- face-painting and crafts from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Time:
The festival is set for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
On Fairmount Street from McKinney Avenue to Howell Street.
Parking
Always an issue for me, but in this instance, its actually free! Free parking will be available at the Crescent Real Estate Tower

State Fair of Texas

One of my favorite events in Dallas is the State Fair of Texas. I wait every year to binge on a variety of fried foods. I always try one new fried food (fried coke, fried alligator, fried ice cream etc), after taking in a Belgian waffle with all the toppings and a large fresh lemonade. Yes, a large smile is written across my face along with powder and syrup.

This year marks the first year where people can save money on going before going to the Fair. I for one hate parking at events, and luckily I always know where the free legal parking is located at. This year you can save money by taking the DART thanks to Kroger’s being the official advance ticket outlet of the State Fair.

By taking the DART to the State Fair of Texas, not only will it save you time with the parking line, but also it’s much cheaper than the $10 parking, and ecofriendly! This will decrease the normal panic right before coming back to your car as you brace yourself to see a dent or scratch on your car.

Side note- I also love taking the DART. A few weeks ago, a friend and I took the TRE/DART to the Dallas Museum and not only did it save us gas, but it allowed us a moment to interact more with each other and the “people” we meet and saw.

Kroger’s is offering DART/State Fair Combo Tickets for 16 dollars(Saves you up to 5 dollars). This includes transportation on the DART rail and local buses on the date of use.

(There are a few stipulations- The passes are not valid for services on TRE, Fort Worth T, or paratransit service. A simple solution to the “stipulations” is to simply park at a DART train station and avoid the traffic and extra charges. )

Bonus!!! For more savings check this out

Advance General Admission: $13.50 (compared to $15 gate at State Fair admission gates).
Advance Season Pass: $29.95 (not sold at State Fair admission gates).

A season pass includes:

  • One free Cinemark Theatre ticket (Valid Sunday thru Thursday only – Sept. 1- Oct. 29, 2009). Not good for pass restricted films or the Cinemark IMAX and XD locations. Additional premiums will apply for Real D 3D presentations.
  • Season Pass Stipulation…. The season pass must be presented at all times in order to gain admission. The season pass may be used once per day. If you wish to leave and return on the same day, you must have your hand stamped before exiting the park. Season passes are non-transferable, non-refundable, and non-replaceable. The 2009 Season Pass expires on the last day of the 2009 operating season
